How Peptides Signal

Receptor biology, peptide signalling, endocrine physiology and pleiotropy.

About This Course

One Hour Per Day Over Three Days. Therapeutic peptides have moved from the margins of pharmaceutical science to the centre of contemporary medicine. The GLP-1 receptor agonists — now among the most commercially successful medicines in history — are peptide drugs. The biological aging research that occupies the pages of Cell, Nature, and the New England Journal of Medicine is fundamentally peptide science. The field practitioners call 'functional medicine' or 'longevity medicine' rests on a foundation of peptide pharmacology. Yet most healthcare professionals — and most scientists working adjacent to this field — have not had an accessible, well-referenced, accurate account of what therapeutic peptides actually are at the molecular, pharmacological, regulatory, and clinical levels. This course provides that account. It is designed for a broad professional audience: pharmacists and pharmacy technicians; nurses and advanced practice nurses; medical students; scientists in adjacent disciplines; health educators; and clinically interested researchers. It does not assume clinical prescribing experience. It does assume scientific literacy at approximately an undergraduate health sciences level. The course covers six topics across six chapters, each introduced with a clinical anchor that explains why the science matters for practice. The final assessment consists of twenty multiple-choice questions covering the full course.

By the End of This Course You Will Be Able To: Define therapeutic peptides and distinguish them from proteins and small-molecule drugs. Explain the biological mechanisms through which peptides exert their effects. Describe the pharmacokinetic challenges associated with peptide medicines. Understand the pharmaceutical development process. Evaluate peptide formulation, stability and quality considerations. Describe the European regulatory framework governing therapeutic peptides.
