The AntiMicrobial Effects of Cannabis

Beyond their effects on the endocannabinoid system, cannabinoids and other constituents of Cannabis sativa have demonstrated intriguing antimicrobial properties in laboratory research. In this session, Daniel Gana reviews the emerging evidence surrounding the antimicrobial effects of cannabis and its key constituents, examining what experimental studies tell us—and, importantly, what they do not. The session explores research investigating cannabinoids including CBD, CBG and THC, their activity against different microorganisms, and proposed mechanisms underlying these effects. Particular attention is given to findings involving Gram-positive bacteria, including Staphylococcus species and antimicrobial-resistant organisms such as MRSA, as well as emerging research into biofilms and selected Gram-negative organisms. The broader evidence concerning potential antifungal and other antimicrobial effects is also considered, together with the considerable gap between promising laboratory findings and demonstrated clinical effectiveness. This session provides an evidence-focused examination of an interesting and developing area of cannabinoid pharmacology.
